Confidence Ripples: How Self-Belief Inspires and Empowers Others

October 14, 20244 min read

“Confidence is contagious. So is lack of confidence.” – Vince Lombardi

Confidence is a remarkable force. It can shape your actions, elevate your success, and—perhaps most importantly—inspire and empower those around you. Recently, I gave a keynote speech in which I introduced the Columbia Protocol, a tool used to assess individuals in crisis. During the session, I encouraged participants to ask each other questions and practice using the tool. Little did I know that one of the participants would soon need to apply what she learned in a real-life situation.

After the keynote, this participant found herself in a position where a co-worker was struggling and needed help. While she felt nervous about initiating such an important conversation, she remembered what I told her during the session. She drew on that knowledge, gained confidence in her ability, and proceeded to use the Columbia Protocol to navigate the discussion. The confidence she had in herself—not just the tool—made all the difference. Her ability to act in that moment didn’t just impact her co-worker; it impacted herself and everyone else around her.

This is the power of self-confidence. It’s not just about how you feel or perform; it’s about how your belief in yourself can uplift, encourage, and guide others. Your confidence creates a ripple effect, building trust, fostering connection, and making a difference in ways you may not even realize.

But how can you boost your self-confidence, especially when faced with situations that push you outside your comfort zone? Here are three tips based on positive psychology to help you nurture your self-confidence and, in turn, inspire others.

1. Practice Positive Affirmations - The way you speak to yourself shapes your mindset. In my coaching, I always ensure my clients are equipped with a personal and powerful affirmation they can use when things become difficult. Positive affirmations are a powerful tool to help rewire your thoughts and beliefs. Repeating phrases like "I am capable," "I am resilient," or "I handle challenges with grace" can reinforce a confident mindset. These statements may seem simple, but they can help transform the internal dialogue that drives self-doubt.

In my workshop “Change Your Thoughts, Change Your Life,” I teach participants the importance of internal self-talk as research shows that positive affirmations can reduce stress and improve performance under pressure. By affirming your strengths, you create a solid foundation of self-belief. Over time, this belief becomes second nature, equipping you to handle challenges with greater confidence. Remember, the more confident you feel internally, the more this confidence radiates outward, encouraging those around you to trust their own abilities.

2. Focus on Progress, Not Perfection -

Progress not perfection

Confidence doesn’t come from being perfect; it comes from recognizing and celebrating your progress. Many people lose confidence because they focus too much on what they haven’t achieved or their mistakes. Shift your mindset by focusing on the small victories along the way. One exercise I use with clients is to journal their three big wins for the day each evening before bed. This helps them to shift their mind from negative thoughts to positive and uplifting achievements they can celebrate.

When you learn something new or tackle a difficult task, celebrate it. The participant at my keynote may not have executed the Columbia Protocol perfectly, but she took action, and that action was what mattered most. Confidence grows with experience, and each step forward is a step toward greater self-assurance. Encourage yourself and others to appreciate the journey, not just the destination.

3. Surround Yourself with Positive, Supportive People -

Support Group

The people around you have a significant influence on your confidence. Surround yourself with individuals who encourage your growth, celebrate your successes, and offer constructive feedback. Positive social support boosts your resilience and reinforces your self-worth.

Confidence is contagious. When you believe in yourself, you give others permission to do the same, cultivating psychologically safe and supportive environments. These psychologically safe environments not only boost our own confidence but also inspire others to step into their power. By practicing positive affirmations, focusing on progress, and surrounding yourself with supportive individuals, you can boost your self-confidence in meaningful ways. And in doing so, you create an environment where everyone feels empowered to step up and make an impact.

So, the next time you're faced with a challenge, remember: your confidence doesn’t just serve you—it lifts everyone around you.
