Earth Day Reflections: Promoting Environmental Wellness in the Workplace

April 23, 20243 min read

A nation that destroys its soils destroys itself. Forests are the lungs of our land, purifying the air and giving fresh strength to our people." Franklin D. Roosevelt

This week, we celebrated Earth Day; it's an ideal time to reflect on the interconnectedness of environmental well-being and overall health, especially within corporate environments. Companies play an important role in promoting environmental well-being and fostering a culture of sustainability that benefits both individuals and the planet. Let's explore the links between environmental wellness and health and discuss actionable strategies for companies to promote eco-friendly practices in the workplace.

The Connection Between Environmental Wellbeing and Health: Environmental well-being is one of the Life Forces I focus on in my coaching. How we feel in our environment significantly affects our overall health. Noisy, messy work areas can increase stress levels and lead to a loss in productivity. Environmental wellness includes proper lighting, air quality, water purity, access to green spaces, sustainable transportation, and overall ecological sustainability. These elements have a direct impact on human health and well-being:

  • Air Quality: Poor air quality can lead to respiratory issues, allergies, and cardiovascular problems among employees. Clean air, on the other hand, promotes better respiratory health and overall vitality. Make sure work areas are well-ventilated. Consider installing an air purifying system or windows that open to allow fresh air flow.

    Water for a Meeting
  • Water Quality: Access to clean, safe water is essential for hydration, proper digestion, and overall wellness. Employees should have easy access to clean, filtered water while in the workplace. In manufacturing and construction areas, be sure to have multiple areas where employees can easily access water, especially on hot days.

  • Green Spaces: Nature has a profound impact on mental health, reducing stress levels, improving mood, and enhancing cognitive function. Green spaces in and around workplaces contribute to employee well-being and productivity. If adding an outdoor green space is not practical in your area, adding potted plants to the work environment can help improve air quality and boost mood in the office.

  • Sustainable Transportation: Encouraging employees to use sustainable transportation options like cycling, walking, or carpooling reduces carbon emissions, promotes physical activity and reduces traffic-related stress.

Strategies for Promoting Environmental Wellness in the Workplace: Organizational leaders should take charge and lead by example to promote environmental wellness within their companies. Here are some actionable strategies leaders can implement:

  • Recycling and Waste Reduction Programs: Provide easily accessible recycling bins, reduce single-use plastics, and encourage employees to minimize waste through conscious consumption habits. Host events like community e-recycling days.

  • Promote Energy Efficiency: Upgrade to energy-efficient appliances, implement lighting controls, and educate employees on energy-saving practices such as turning off lights and electronics when not in use.

  • Support Sustainable Transportation: Provide incentives for carpooling, cycling, or using public transportation. Offer bike racks, showers, and changing facilities for employees who commute by bike or foot.

    Plants in an office
  • Create Green Spaces: Incorporate indoor plants, create outdoor gardens or green areas, and organize nature-based activities like gardening workshops or outdoor yoga sessions.

  • Educate and Raise Awareness: Conduct workshops, webinars, or lunch-and-learn sessions on environmental wellness, sustainability, climate change, and eco-friendly lifestyle practices. Encourage employees to participate in Earth Day events and initiatives.

  • Collaborate with Eco-Friendly Suppliers: Partner with vendors and suppliers who prioritize sustainability and eco-friendly practices in their products and services.

Earth Day Initiatives and Beyond: Earth Day serves as a catalyst for companies to reassess their environmental impact and commit to meaningful change. However, promoting environmental wellness should be an ongoing effort integrated into the company's values and corporate culture. By prioritizing sustainability, companies not only contribute to a healthier planet but also foster a positive work environment, enhance employee satisfaction, and demonstrate social responsibility to customers and stakeholders.

A Greener Future Starts in the Workplace: As we celebrate Earth Day and reflect on the importance of environmental well-being, let's remember that every action we take, no matter how small, contributes to a healthier planet and a brighter future. Companies have a unique opportunity to lead by example, inspire positive change, and empower employees to embrace sustainable practices both at work and in their daily lives. Together, we can create a greener, healthier world for future generations.
